Kirtan was born in Los Angeles to dedicated yogi parents. His early childhood included daily study of Hindu scriptures, reading and writing in Sanskrit, mantra chanting and body surfing at Venice Beach. His first trip to India was at the age of 6, and a few years later returned for a year of intensive yogic studies at an Ashram. In between Los Angeles and India, he lived on farm community in the foothills of the Sequoia National Park where his love for the outdoors and nature blossomed. Hiking, swimming and navigating river rapids were some of his favorite childhood moments.
After his All-Star high school football days, he went on to play rugby while attending UCLA. The years of football and rugby left his body so damaged that he signed up for yoga class offered through the University. He was fortunate to have Shiva Rea as his first Asana teacher. After graduating in International Relations, he moved to Brazil where he continued to do yoga until his Brazilian teacher encouraged him to devote his life to sharing yoga.
He completed Resident Teacher Training in a mountain retreat outside Sao Paulo with Regina Shakti, one of Brazil’s foremost Hatha Yoga masters. Shortly after, he accepted a teaching opportunity which led him to a remote island off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. For 6 years he taught Yoga and guided guests and celebrities from around the world on jungle hikes and ocean kayak tours at Body Soul Adventures, and internationally acclaimed Yoga/Adventure/Fitness Program.
Over the years he has organized and participated in dozens of Yoga Retreats and workshops in the US, India and Brazil. He teaches Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga to all ages and levels. The violent contact sports have made way for the sacred principle of Ahimsa(non-violence). He is known for his attentiveness, sincerity and for infusing the devotional aspects of Bhakti Yoga into his class. He was recently featured in a Wall Street Journal article on Yoga.
